    Hmm. You’re the second mutterings I’ve checked out, both non-Americans, and each had “knife” for Stanley. That is definitely a British-related term? Not at all common in the United States.

    Well, cool mutterings, and interesting from my point of view! See ya :)

    Okay..I’m asking, too.
    Stanley::Knife?
    We have Mack the Knife here, but no Stanley.
    Or is that a brand name?

    That’s interesting! I have a Stanley retractable knife in my toolbox but no one here would ever say, “Would ya hand me the Stanley, please.” To us those are just called Box Cutters no matter what brand it is.

    ahh.. See I’d call it ‘a stanley knife’ never a box cutter… Remeber the hijackers who had ‘box cutters’? It took me much of that day to realise what at box cutter actually was.

    It’s kinda odd though, because I’m used to Americans calling things by brand. Like tissues. Though there are always Band-aids in my bag regardless of their brand!

    For this American, tissues are always just tissues regardless of brand but “Band-aids” is what I always say (and what I always buy.)

    And yeah, I remember all too well that the hijackers had “box cutters” . . . I remember it every time I go to use one, sadly. Even still, it’s not something we silly Americans call by brand name… and that’s one of the little unique differences between us from the U.S. and those from other nations.

    See ya :)
