Make a Wish

Make a wish

I asked one of the kids I saw today “So, if you had a magic wand, what would you magic up?” (We were reading I’m green and I’m grumpy, and were on the fairy page)
His answer was more games for his Nintendo Wii.. then he proceeded to list all the games he already had, one included Sonic in the title, so I was pleased that Sonic was still alive and kicking. Some days I have great conversations with the kids.

We then moved onto the page with the witch, and I wondered what evil things she might wish for or magic up, but we got stuck at toads…

What would you magic up?

Winter

July 28, 2009 · 0 comments

Newcastle doesn’t really have winter. Well it does, but I think it lasted for about 3 days with a frost. I remember freezing in our little demountable classrooms (don’t NSW school suck when it comes to housing kids in these things??) in Winter, and boiling in them in Summer. But I know what cold is now that I’m in Canberra!

Cold is walking up the hill to work at minus-something-or-other. It’s the fog not lifting until 2pm, for a glimmer of sun before it sets at 4:30! It’s the crunch of frosts under your feet. It’s looking at the BOM online repeatedly, and celebrating at lunchtime that it’s cracked zero degree.

I love winter in Canberra. I might complain, but I love it.

The cold air makes me smile.

I really don’t care whether this kid is actually saving for a laptop or not, but he had rhythm, he had creativity, and sounded a hell of a lot better than the girl with the violin around the corner from him this morning at the Old Bus Depot markets. He even had a biscuit tin lid under something to make a high-hat-like sound.

Ingenuity

So he got my $2. And made us all smile :)

For a friend’s birthday last weekend, we had a bit of a rolling afternoon/evening. Started with lunch at Delissio’s in Braddon.

Hannah's Bday - Dellisio's

I ordered gnocchi and Rish went for a vegetarian roast vegetable pizza. I wasn’t overly fussed on the gnocchi (it was okay) but OMG the taste in the pizza. I happily stole a couple of slices of that! ;) I think it was the tangy goat’s cheese that did it for me :)

Hannah's Bday - Dellisio's

Being a birthday lunch, I just had to have coffee and cake – flourless orange cake often grabs me!

And I just loved the little cup my latte came in – mug-like, but still latte-esque, with the lack of handles. Good thing too, as it was after 3pm by then, and was starting to get a bit chilly out!

(and here are my home made pizzas from last night… before being ovened… there was kinda too much cheese on the bocconcini one :p Even did the dough myself – in the bread maker, of course!) [click to continue…]

Pink Hello Kitty Cupcake

So, I’m told today, that as I’m now 27, I’m late 20s. Crap. Time to grow up a little?

(like the cupcakes a workmate made for me? she got the lollies at Christmas time in Victor Harbour – saw them and thought of me. Aww!)

Back to School

(I’m just reminded of Billy Madison right now…)

Anyway. I’ve finally and officially enrolled in uni for Semester 2. Starting a 2 year Masters by coursework… not sure what I’ve gotten myself into… besides a whole load of reading, several days up in Sydney on weekends for intensive days.. and assignments! It’s been so long! *blinks*

I’ve applied for the maximum amount of study leave (5 hours/week), but we’ll see if I get it… eep! I’m trying to argue that it’s very important and that it will be beneficial for me, the agency and, of course, the rest of the ACTPS… Well, I think it is!

So, I’m a student again. Why?

Gold and Plum Wine

July 21, 2009 · 0 comments

I ate so much in my recent Sydney expedition. Korean was also on the list. A place called Seoul-Ria in Chinatown. We were meant to go with a much larger group, but seven of us were tardily drinking at 3 Monkeys, and so wandered up about an hour after everyone else. Sorry guys! We’re not good at rushing :)

Seoul-Ria Restaurant

We order two huge steamboat type things. Both were yummy yummy with meats, and tofu and veges gallore!

Seoul-Ria Restaurant

A couple of the guys decided part way into their meal that they wanted beer, and so I decided I wanted wine. After finding people to share with me, we ordered a plum wine – that ended up having gold flakes in it! I’ve seen sparkling wines with gold before, but not plum wine. It had a taste that reminded us all of our childhood. Cough mediciney… but not in an unpleasant way…

A frost

Frost

We get many frosts in Canberra. I love how the grass crunches under my feet when I’m walking to work :)

Friday night last week, a few friends and I headed into Honeysuckle (Newcastle) for the “Livesites” thing the council were putting on. This basically involved fire, music, belly dancers and us finding a place to eat!

Rugged upBurn!

This was a chance for me to gloat about not freezing because I’ve got cold Canberra blood now, and to wear a new pair of heels I picked up in the sales. A little bit teetery, but they look good!

Jess had booked us in to ‘Twist’ cafe, which, like Depot, had clipboards for their yummy menu

Twist Honeysuckle
Started with breads.

I ordered a salad with roast pumpkin, halloumi and yumminess. I think I was in that sort of mood over the weekend!

Skimmed their desserts and cocktails, and decided to move on to Silo for our drinks and coffees. I managed to combine the two, and finished my night with an Espresso Martini. mmm. It reminded be of drinking the cold coffees in Greece last winter. And wishing I was in the summer over there instead of the Australian winter!
