Just add Vodka

Slushee!

The cocktail slushee mixes that I ordered with the Ezibuy voucher I won from That’s Noice came Tuesday morning. Each calls for half a bottle of vodka or white rum… think I’ll need a few friends around to share these with once summer comes! Thanks again ladies!

Chicken for Dinner

I love anything that involves throwing things in a pot, putting it in the oven, and showing up 1-1.5 hours later to eat it!

Chicken for Dinner

Let’s call it a “Taste test” with the eyes. What are the ingredients to this dinner?

So Human

I like it when I get in to see my prefered doctor. No, I don’t mind paying the full $70 up front, then claiming $33.55 or whatever the going rate is from Medicare. I don’t really even mind that she runs late and that, like today, sometimes it’s by an hour.

I like that she writes down the little things I mention, like that I’m studying part-time (I had a text book with me to read while waiting). I like that she takes into consideration that last time I had antibiotics I was vomiting for a few days, so holds off on them until I get this blood test back (or if I get worse, which is unlikely given I feel I’m getting better, and with the medical certificate I won’t be back at work til Friday). And that I probably have a conscience and don’t want to pass my germs back to the kids and my co-workers, even though I surely got it from one of them in the first place :p

She didn’t even ask me this time when I was planning on popping out kids (probably saving it for the pap test in November)… though she did warn that H1N1 could have effects on foetuses, whether you know you’re pregnant or not.

So, I wandered off to the pathology place around the corner from the Dr’s to get the blood out (no, not for a pregnancy test, for iron and all that to make sure my body’s gotten it’s act together on absorbing the protein I eat and isn’t neglecting anything in the process). I was asked if I’d had a blood test before, and I replied “Yes, and everything went black”. The nurse suggested that I perhaps should lie down for it. And what do you know, it worked, and nothing went black. She did only take 3 vials, and last time it was 5 on an overnight fast but still.

Baby steps.

Maybe one of these days I’ll get the courage up to give blood again?

Oh, and another good thing:

There’s yummy sushi at Manuka. I think it was Mee’s sushi? Soft yummy salmon! I bought it for an early lunch while I sat in the sun until my approximate appointment time.

Sushi Manuka
$11.70, including a 350mL diet coke and two soy sauce fish.

My seedlings are loving this alternating rainy and sunny weather, even if the rest of us aren’t. I’m just going to savour the sunshine. And be happy that I’m on study leave/flex today, because this way I don’t have to decide if my cough is bad enough to justify another sick day and a trip to the doctor. Put that off til tomorrow!

Banana Bread

September 26, 2009 · 0 comments

Inspired by having three well-overripe bananas in the fruit bowl, I decided attempting Banana Bread was a great idea. Let’s just ignore the fact that I still don’t own a loaf tin, and am probably missing some ingredients.

Dairy-free Banana Bread

As usual, I used a recipe from Taste.com.au and phona-ised it.

Dairy-free Banana Bread

Baked in a round tin, substituted milk with soy milk, butter with canola oil, and added in walnuts, because we have two opened packets of them. Why? No idea. Oh and I used three small bananas instead of two medium. Heh.

Dairy-free Banana Bread

Tasted pretty good – we ate more than half of it for lunch! Yums!

Natural 'Cures'

Having another day off today, trying to keep the cough that started up this morning from taking over. Rest, sunshine, water and citrus fruits. I don’t think my stomach particularly likes the cold and flu tablets, so I’ll keep them for night so I can sleep.

Backyard Flowers

I think that sitting outside with the ants and the flowers is the best thing. These ones are blooming this week :)

Backyard Flowers

I do, now, have dust on my legs from having them on the table. Fake-tan orange. Nice. I love our sunburnt country :p

More (fluffy) Babies

I left work at 10am, after sniffling my way through my first assessment of the day. I was way too vague to be at work today, and was not breathing all that well.

I parked down at the lake, and got to see these cute cygnets on the walk back…

Swans at Lake Ginninderra

Cuties! I love spring :)

Liam

(he looks like a baby to me)

Baby Liam

3140g (or 8lb 4oz in baby weight) and 37cm. I think that translates to being short and tubby? Make that 47cm. 37 was his head.

The dust storm (oh and the gastro and cold and flu viruses that are going around) was all anyone spoke about today.

Canberra Dust Storm

Fortunately, I don’t have the gastro. I think I have a cold though. ugh. Looking forward to rain and a good night’s sleep. To clear my head and all the dust.

Canberra Dust Storm

Oh, I wish I’d thought of this… I was trying to think up new slogans for that banner all weekend!

edit (Th 9pm): someone put one of my pics up on the Wikipedia Australian Dust Storm page. *ahem* I wasn’t using my camera while driving. nu-ah. How filthy was the windscreen???

Not a part of it

September 21, 2009 · 0 comments

There’s this toy drive going at the moment for “Operation Christmas Child”. The idea is you gather a shoebox of little gifts, like pens and pencils, small toys and so on, and send it to Africa or someplace for Christmas.

Sounds nice, right?

Me being be, I decided to skim the website of the charity involved, to see what else they do.

They’re a Christian charity, as many charities are (Care Australia isn’t).

The thing I have the most issues with about what they do? Their approach to HIV/AIDS education. They provide recordings in the native language on HIV/AIDS education… but the way they do it?

There are two separate training tracks: Building the Church, which includes the Bible in Khmer along with scriptural training lessons; and Messages of Hope, which includes lessons addressing HIV/AIDS, child protection, health and sanitation, and parenting.

Sorry, I don’t want a part in that, nor do I, as their newsletter said, want a part in putting together a box that (let me find the quote) “through the gifts the children will come to know the love of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas” (p2)…
I read another part somewhere today, which I can’t track down, that credited the boxes for giving the church an ‘in’ to a community in order to spead religion. (I wish I could find the quote, sorry).

Ahem. But anyway. Find a charity whose mission and methods you agree with. Read their back story. That’s my message that I’m preaching ;)

It’s closely followed by these two:

What's in my bag?

Both from my undergrad days. How colourful ;)
