20 years since “the earthquake”
By Fiona on 28th December, 2009
I can’t believe I was only 7 years old, hanging out at the Newcastle Blood Bank on Watt Street Newcastle. There were police in there at the time, waiting their turn to donate blood when the earthquake struck. People thought it was a bomb, or a gas explosion, or something over a BHP. A nurse was caught in the lift. I’m sure many other people were caught in lifts around the place too.
“When the Earthquake happened” was the story starter of choice going into year 2 for most in my class. Definitely a “where were you?” situation…

I can’t believe that it was 20 years ago! I remember being in the car with mum when it happened, not comprehending the enormity of what had happened.
Time flies (and we keep getting older!)

Gosh .. twenty years!?
I was in Sydney (Sutherland), in a newsagency. I didn’t feel anything, but I heard all the shelves rattle slightly. Didn’t think anything of it until I got home and my dad said he’d heard the walls shake. Then we found out there’d been an earthquake..

I was holidaying overseas but remember hearing about it on the news and was surprised because, at that age, I was under the impression that Australia was immune to earthquakes.

I remember it well. I was about 19 and holidaying at Lake Macquarie and we definitely felt it! It was very exciting and I remember being told by a little old lady that her whole flat shook like crazy but not a single one of her knick-knacks fell off the shelves thanks to the Blu-tak she had on everything! One of our group was in Newcastle at the time and he was freaked out a lot!
