Mardi Gras recovery

As Oxford Street and surrounds recovers from another Mardi Gras, a few links for consideration…

From ACON (AIDS council of NSW):
Apparently Gay hate crimes increase around Mardi Gras time.
Is your workplace LGBT-friendly? It’s more than just “having a policy”… (http://www.prideindiversity.com.au/)

From Riayn’s twitter:
Realising why we don’t have gay marriage since all my co-workers believe I should be happy with current defacto laws. Umm, no.
2. Also was told I could go overseas to get marriage. None of them realised that the Oz government refuses to recognise it.

White Knot

Happy Sunday. (Alas I wasn’t at Mardi Gras, or the Eurotrash party I was invited too last night, instead I spent the evening watching “Step Up” and whatever Tomb Raider was on.)

Close friend of mine is unspokenly gay, but those close to him acknowledge it to be fact. His family suspect but are in denial. My hope is that one day he can happily have it out in the open, find a life partner and we can all have a day to celebrate it.

Honestly I still do not understand why gay marriage is still not legal. Of course they should be afforded the same rights and to me it’s very basic and simple isn’t it? Unless I’m missing something?

http://www.starobserver.com.au/news/2010/02/24/nsw-to-get-relationship-register/22115

“A registration scheme for both heterosexual and same-sex couples provides a tangible and documented form of relationship recognition. However, it still lacks the symbolic and universal recognition that comes with marriage,” lobby co-convenor Benjamin Keats said.
