Roses

I come home from the supermarket with a bunch of roses, to brighten the house, to bring Rish a smile when he works from home in the mornings, hiding from the cold of outside.

There’s something awesome about the way roses dry up and die. I remember a bunch I kept once from Rish, maybe in uni or high school, for months, because they still looked gorgeous after the colour was gone and they were dry.

Black Cat

I never really liked licorice and aniseed growing up (or as a grown up), so I surprised myself when I took a piece of licorice (in lieu of the freddo frogs on offer), nibbled on it, and actually enjoyed it.

Rish thinks I’m gross now ;)

Monday marks the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia… and what better way to mark it that with a worldwide kiss-in running in different places around the world from May 14-17. Most of the Australian ones are today to coincide with the Equal Marriage rallies, which will be ongoing I’m sure in the lead up to the federal election…

Pucker up!

Well, actually, scattered around the house are the books I’m reading at the moment, thanks to little brown boxes from Amazon

(sharing this for the Noice-ities this weekend!)

The lonely planet guide to Germany… planning, scoping out bars, bike paths, accommodation, trains, planes, history…
Generally using it to get myself excited, and to try to plan a little ahead so I don’t spend the first morning of each city wondering what to do over breakfast!

IBS for Dummies.
Now I KNOW I’m not a Dummy, but I’m liking the structure and the order of this book, which allows me to work through ideas.
(even though I started towards the back! oh and even if I don’t agree with some of the content :p)
I still wouldn’t feel comfortable pulling it out in public to read, but it’s telling me and reassuring me that I’m heading in the right direction.
You know how I’ve been doing this stress course? It’s amazing how stress you get in the actual sessions! I need to learn me some RELAXING!

Life is a verb. A doing word. It’s encouraged me to do a little free writing, which I’ll do more of once I’ve gotten this essay handed in (I’m not procrastinating, I’m rest resting it, like a piece of meat, before I go back for the final edit ahead of submitting it). I used to write a lot more, writing in note books, writing online. About me, I mean, not about the food I’m eating, or the flowers I see, but writing for me, about me, about the thoughts in my head, exploring and explaining. And I think I’m about to do more if it. I have a notebook ready to take away, one for my travel journal- for the tickets, the random, and one just for me.

I’ll be in Melbourne in 48 hours! And on a plane to Germany in 2 weeks! (I have a few cheap paperbacks for the flights, you know, to leave somewhere if I don’t feel they need to be brought home! Bookcrossing?)

I probably wear makeup about once a fortnight when I’m heading out for dinner and/or drinks, so you’ll usually see me without makeup on this blog, but why not join in the fun of Bloggers without Makeup? :p

Bloggers without Makeup

I’m in the Uni library, on the final day of my semester, writing an essay about modifying a LOTE curriculum to make the language learning of a girl with Asperger’s disorder more successful. It’s an interesting topic, and does not require makeup (though it does require coffee!)

Nearly there!

Gorgeously simple! I wanted something with meat in it the other night. But nothing too sweet or greasy…

Low Fat Lemon Chicken

The recipe I based it on came from from the Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook: 200 Wok Recipes book that I got through the bookclub at work for about $5! Sooo simple, just wish I’d planned ahead and marinaded overnight :)

Served it up with steamed baby bok choi and some carrots, along with Jasmine rice (because that’s the rice that was in the cupboard, and is the one Rish likes the best). Oh and I also used free-range chicken, with helped in along a notch I think!

It was really nicely tangy, and nicer than the overly syrupy stuff you get some times from takeaway. I love my lemon :)

Lamb Bolognese?

May 12, 2010 · 0 comments

How can you go wrong with reduced to clear (lamb) mince, kinky olive oil, red wine and fresh basil?

kinky olive oil, basil, red wine

There’s certainly a ‘lamby’ smell to it…

Bolognese

Throw in some carrot and zucchini for vege goodness. (oops, forgot mushrooms!)

Lamb Bolognese

Winter warmers! :)

“You have to try the one where you go from one end to the other with ice cream and chocolate cake”

Dessert at Parlour
Belgian chocolate fondant with caramel ice cream & guirlache $15

Unfortunately, I couldn’t eat it (on any of the desserts on the menu in their creamy goodness!), and settled on a glass or two of the dessert wine… I’m told it was divine, hey Rish?

(and Matt rolled his eyes at my foot photo-ing. pfft! :p)

Canberra winter mornings… on my walk to work.

What a way to spend a mothers day morning – in the Crisp Canberra air, running around the lake in the sunshine.

Today was my third Mother’s Day Classic… and it went well :) My time was 31:10 according to my watch, 31:20 according to my official time that was just smsed through to me.

Last year’s wasn’t that great, mostly because I was sick.. The one two years ago was the first time I ran 5km, I think? I did it then in 31:55… haven’t improved much in that time, sooo many stop starts.

Ran into Jen there – her first (of many more to come, I’m sure) go at the race. She got a good time too!

I’ll have to admit the showbag at the end wasn’t as good as the last couple of years, problem with no longer having Tupperware as a sponsor (no more breast-looking bottles!). Got a small thing of hairspray, some panty liners, a pen, a discount voucher for vitamins and a Belconnen Markets drink bottle. And a banana, which I scoffed down.

Okies, back to work. Apparently I have a weights session with Rish at 3!

Hope you had a good mothers day! Apparently, Australia is one of the best places to be a mother. Second best, in fact. Enjoy.

A friend linked to a post about the book Ant Encounters: Interaction Networks and Colony Behavior (Primers in Complex Systems)… the post had the following quote:

Every summer, I get calls from people who are puzzled to find a heap of dead Argentine ants in their freezer. The ants are attracted to something, presumably an odor, in the rubber lining of freezer doors. No ant finds the freezer and goes back to recruit the others; once an ant goes in the freezer, it is doomed. But since the ants lay trail wherever they go, the ants that are attracted to the freezer all lay a trail on their way to it, and this is reinforced by more curious but equally doomed ants. Since Argentine ants are enormously abundant in many parts of the world, this procedure must lead to food more often than to the untimely death of many ants.

This, of course, all relates to my experiences with ants on the toothbrush

Perhaps I should put my toothbrush in the freezer? Or we need to get in touch with Deborah Gorton?

The organisation of my trip to Germany is taking shape, finally. We have flights to and from Vienna, I have train tickets for once we’re back in Frankfurt to Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin, and have started sorting out / looking at accommodation.

Getting there.

Still need to get back to Frankfurt from Berlin, but that will be with Rish, so we need to organise that one together. And harass friends about Vienna :p

Sydney to Berlin
from the archives of the State Library of NSW

I’ve enrolled in a “Stress Containment” course, which is running over the Thursday nights in May, through the Women’s Information and Referral Centre. I can tell that I’m not exactly managing my stress well at the moment, and I’m hoping that it will give me strategies to improve my well being, and general awesomeness. To learn to breathe. We were doing a mindfulness exercise, and it’s amazing how scattered my brain can be!

Red flower Belconnen

I have a lot to do over the next few weeks (in 3 weeks I’ll be on the plane to Germany!)… There’s one more essay to submit on the 14th, a conference in Melbourne from the 16th – 19th, I fly back to Canberra on the 20th… I have this course I’m doing. And life. And then work, to make sure I have everything in order in case someone calls wanting something NOW. *heh* So I may be absent. But, I still love you!

I’m off to cook up a pot of bolognese sauce… lamb mince, fresh basil, and a little red wine, among others… noms.

xx
