Wine Tasting @ Mount Majura
Wine taste and “tapas” $5 for the serve

A group of us headed for after work drinks out at Mount Majura Vineyard. As a part of the Fireside Festival, they were doing a wine tasting/tapas do with $5 serves of wine with accompanying tapas taste.

Selection and suggested order

Osborne Manzanilla Filla with Green Sicilian Olives

I started with the Manzanllia Filla, which is a dry Sherry… much more pleasant than my cheap cooking sherry! Rish had the Mount Majura 2008 Chardonnay ($21/bottle) with Paprika Almonds. I had a small sip and could taste the oak and skipped onto the reds ;)

Mount Majura 2008 Graciano with Grilled Spanish Chorizo Sausage

My second wine was the 2008 Graciano ($21/bottle), and it was definitely my favourite. I’ll prbably have to pick up a bottle of this to take for Rish’s dad next time we head to Newcastle (?father’s day) as he’s always asking what Canberra region wines are like!

Mount Majura 2008 Tempranillo Shiraz Graciano “TSG” with Piperade with Potatoes

My second red was the 2008 “TSG”, above, which the man who served me said was his favourite. Maybe I was put off my the fritata, or the blend, but it didn’t rate as high for me ;) This is also $21 per bottle.

Mount Majura 2009 Tempranillo with Rockmelon wrapped in Australian prosciutto

Someone needs to explain the whole prosciutto and rockmelon thing to us… I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s that I’m not really a fan of rockmelon? Or that the texture of squishy prosciutto like this is a little odd? Never mind, the 2009 Tempranillo ($35/bottle) went down quite well ;)

What’s your favourite wine? And if you’re in Canberra, what other wineries do I need to visit ASAP? :)

The fireside festival is a great idea. We recently went to Clonakilla winery and everyone was very excited over the wine there.

Gah, I was once at Knightsbridge and this group came in who were celebrating their newest batch/vintage(?) of Rose, and they shouted my entire group a glass. It was divine, but I can’t remember which Canberran winery it was. DARNIT.

Sounds awesome.. pity I couldn’t go!
One of our favourite wines is the Mt Majura Pinot Gris, which we discovered at Bella Vista a couple of years ago

Shame the Pinot Gris wasn’t on offer in the tastings.. I’ll have to take your word for it – and try it once summer hits and I’m back on the whites!
