How To Clean and Tidy a Repossessed Home

Collaborative Post

If you have a property that is vacant, or if you have been to a property auction and you have gotten a great deal on a repossessed property then you will understand how much work needs to be done. You’ll need to give the property a good clean and you will also need to do everything you can to make sure that there is no excess dust either. With vacant or older properties, this tends to be a real problem and most of the time, the house isn’t maintained while it is sitting empty and this can cause even more work for you to deal with.

The First Steps

The first thing that you’ll need to do is make sure that the house is secure. You can do this by checking all of the windows, the doors and any other openings that are present. When you have done this, you can then go through and make sure that there are no panels loose on the side of the home. After all, the last thing you’ll want to do is clean up the home and get it ready to sell again, only to find that it has been broken into due to a security flaw. When you have secured the house, it’s time for you to change all of the locks and to get a backup key for all the doors. This is especially useful if you are going to have several people going in and out of the house at any one time.

Start from the Outside

The next thing you’ll want to do is make sure that the outside of the property is cleaned up. This will help to stop the property from becoming a neighbourhood dumping ground. If you need a starting point then make sure that you mow the lawn and keep on top of it. You can then trim back any bushes, hedges and anything that is growing over the pathway. After all, it is very hard for you to move things in and out of the property when there are hazards underfoot, so this should always be your number one priority. It is entirely possible that there could be an abandoned car outside the property as well, so try and get this removed and also take care of any rubbish that might be present.

If you are having a hard time getting all of the junk and waste removed then you can hire someone to take care of that for you at this website. The team there can recycle your waste easier than ever before and they can also work with you to try and help you with any hazardous waste that you have as well.

Working the Inside

When you have the outside of the house sorted, you can then move on to the inside. There may be damaged appliances and furniture in the house and it helps to get this removed before you start with anything else. You can even try and auction anything in the house that you may not want, such as televisions or pieces of wooden furniture. If the property is really old then you may need to get the carpets replaced and you may also need to repaint the walls as well. Before you do this, make sure that you vacuum up the old carpet and make it as clean as you can in terms of dust and debris. After all, pulling up an old carpet will release clouds of dust into the air, and the last thing you need is to have all of this made worse by surface dust as well.
If you know that you need to re-paint as well as re-carpet then consider getting the painting done before you lift out the old carpet. This will provide you with a level of protection when it comes to splashing paint. If the walls look good, simply give them a good wipe down with a cloth and some anti-bacterial spray. This will remove any surface stains with ease.

Talk with a Pest Exterminator

When you buy an older property, you may find that there are pests and this can cause you huge issues. They can eat through any wooden beams that you have and they can also cause you to experience structural issues as well. If you want to avoid this then consider having a pest exterminator look over the property for you. When you do this, you can be sure that the property is in good condition and you can also put an end to any pest problems before they get worse.

Steaming

Steaming is one of the best ways for you to clean an older home. The heat of the steam will kill any bacteria on contact, so if you are keeping the carpet then get it steam cleaned and do this to any kitchen counters as well. If you have curtains in the house or any fabric that you plan on keeping then a lot of steam cleaning services will take care of this for you as well and this is one of the best ways for you to make sure that you are cleaning the house to the highest possible level. When cleaning the house, make sure that you go over any skirting boards and that you replace the fridge if it is showing signs of mould. This can be a serious problem if the fridge has been left unplugged for a period of time with food in there, and in some instances it may be better for you to get a replacement than it would be for you to get it cleaned out.
When cleaning and steaming, try and clear behind the fridge to make sure that there are no signs of rats and debris. When you have all of this done, you can then go over the house and make it more homely with some air freshener, smelly candles and decoration. You may even be able to clean the grout in the bathroom by using some wire wool and cleaning solution, but if you can’t then you can easily get this chipped off and replaced.

All of these little tips should be more than enough to get you started when cleaning out your new property, and before you know it, it will be in tip-top condition!
