I was just going in to get some more miso soup sachets when I saw these meal kits on special at 2 for $8 (usual price $5.99 each) and I thought I’d give them a go. Inside each is the bare basics – the Pad Thai one only had the noodles and the Pad Thai sauce, so at $6 would not have been worth it as a kit (you think they could have stumped up the crushed peanuts, right?), while the Mussamum was better – rice, marinade, paste and coconut milk… though again, a small sachet of nuts would have been a nice addition rather than having to buy a full bag, and the coconut milk wasn’t enough for my tastes (both heat and creaminess wise) so I added about a third of a tin extra when I cooked it.
The Pad Thai was rather tasty, though again, there are better value kits out there, or you you just buy the noodles and sauce for cheaper individually at the supermarket or Asian grocer.
Tasty, and did inspire me to try different things this week, but next time I Mussamum, it’ll be in a slow cooker with tamarind paste and loads of coconut cream with the curry paste. I did like that I used potato along with sweet potato. A moment of inspiration from the potato drawer!
Newcastle seems to be slowly embracing the Vietnamese Pork Roll, aka Bahn Mi, and this yummy one above is from the Cardiff Bakehouse in the main street of Cardiff – fresh crusty rolls and tangy soy make it divine for $6. They also do a Mega Egg and Bacon Roll for $5.50 with two eggs and heaps of bacon to keep the tradies happy!
I’ve had a few breakfasts out lately, and these two were great – the scrambled breakfast at the top from Belmont 16ft sailing club and the Breakfast Brucetta from Custom Espresso Speers Point (sans eggs).
