Tips For Wearing a Waistcoat

Dress vests have been an integral component of a man’s Waistcoat for years and years. Over the years, there has been very little that has changed in both the structure and design of them. By getting a few of these vests in your closet, you should be able to break open a lot of potential style options that weren’t available to you before.

The Waistcoat

The waistcoat might be one of the most versatile pieces you can get in your wardrobe except for the button-down shirt which has limitless potential. The waistcoat is commonly referred to as a ‘vest.’ This is a piece that dates back to outfits worn in the pre-Victorian era. That is likely why it has been passed down from generation to generation to the point where you will find many generations within a single-family wearing one.

What You Shouldn’t Do In a Vest

There are plenty of different ways to wear a vest that is deemed socially acceptable and reflective of good style. However, there are also certain things that you shouldn’t do. A lot of men enjoy the overall look and feel of a vest because it can give you a very slim look. When you break the rules of wearing one, it could end up making you look like you don’t know what you are doing.

1. Proper Length

For one, you need to pick one that is the right length. The vest should extend beyond your belt. You don’t want a vest that is too short. One that is too short will end up looking bad because it will have your undershirt ballooning out the sides. This can make you look very bad. When buttoned all the way, it should hang in a straight line over the belly area. If the fabric is bunching up in an “X” formation, you need to get a bigger size. Likewise, if you do end up buttoning the vest, you shouldn’t button the last button. It’s not meant to be buttoned.

2. Wear The Right Undershirt

The undershirt you wear with your vest is just as important as the vest itself. You need the shirt to be properly fitting and the proper cut. That way, the sleeves don’t cause puffing in the shoulder area which can make you look ridiculous.

3. Pick Something You Like

There are differing opinions on whether you should contrast your shirt with the vest color. The fact is, there is no “right” or “wrong” in this scenario. Pick something you like and go with it with full confidence. Go for a classic Cornish Tartan Waiscoat – Tartan Tweeds.

Wearing Men’s Dress Vests

A lot of the time when a man buys their first vest is apart of a 3-piece suit. A lot of the times men leave their vest hanging in the closet until they have an occasion that calls for a 3-piece suit. You shouldn’t wait to wear your full suit just to break out your vest. It can be a very versatile piece of clothing that you can style in a variety of ways with ease.

One of the best and easiest ways to get the best usage out of your vest is by wearing it as a 2-piece outfit without your suit blazer. When combined with the right shirt and tie, you can have a formal yet actionable look. You will find a lot of the characters in the movie Inception using this same look.

If you are wearing the vest more casually, you would still button up the best. You can pair it with your favorite pair of blue jeans and an open collar dress shirt. This way, you can retain the dapper appeal but look much more comfortable and casual while doing so.

You can even add these vests to an outfit that features shorts. If you are planning on doing this, you will want to leave the vest unbuttoned. Typically, you want to only use solid colors rather than patterns as they can end up clashing with your vest.
