Exploring Naval Logistics

Naval Logistics refers to the process of managing and moving resources – raw materials, people, equipment, shipment, packaging, and inventory–from the pickup point to the desired location. The term ‘logistics’ originated from the military, which involved transporting food, tools, weapons, medicines, shelter to soldiers on the battlefield.

Sea and oceans are an international asset. In this era of billions of International Trade, an effective logistics system in sea-ways is the most important thing for naval operations. Superior afloat support is crucialin maintaining the wide range of naval operations around the world in the 21stcentury. From coordinating troops, engaged in humanitarian missions, the protection of shipping lanes, to carry out expeditionary missions, an afloat support system has never been more important. In peace and war, the purpose of naval logistics for Navies is to deliver and sustainoperational readiness to heroes working for the country and the people in need. This trend would only continue to grow in the future.

Functional Areas of NavalLogistics:

1.    Supply

For centuries the most helpful way of supply was water, which sailing ships orroad vehicles found difficult to carry in large quantities. Thisarea is concerned with proper and on-time supplement of food, military equipment, health aids, shelter necessities etc.

2.    Transportation

This area deals with delivering raw materials, equipment, shipment, packaging, and inventory from one location to another. Many evolving naval transportation ships arecoming out because of the advanced technological system. Currently, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is the largest and most advanced combatant in the world.

3.    Communication

As freights stay on board for a very long time, coordination through a strong network is necessary. In this case, TMS software plays a major role in building connections.

4.    Transportation Management System (TMS) Software

TMS software provides shippers to optimize their supply-chain performance against economic downturns. The frequent rise in freight and fuel rates, tight shipping capacity, and ever-changing customer preferences have increased the need for real-time operation. This software system provides real-time data with the help of ArtificialIntelligence. As logistics networks become increasingly complex and operations are now numerous, outdated systems are not efficient to keep up with modern naval logistics.

Final Thoughts

When we consider the topic of logistic planning, we must recognize that no logistic plan has any worth unless it is based on a strategic plan. And, no strategic plan is of any worth unless it can be supported logistically. In conclusion, we can say naval logistic is a term for navy logistics and the decisions and tactics of the navy comes from the government.

The means of any war are men, materials, and service. The fundamental elements of naval logistics are a determination of requirements, resourcing and efficient distribution to successfully carry out military operations.
