Alcohol abuse and misuse have affected several aspects of human life, and the corporate world has not been left behind. News of fired employees and failed corporations due to alcoholism is spreading like wildfire in today’s world. If you fall under such a category, this is the right time to view more of your options for addiction treatment. However, many people wonder why cases of alcoholism in the workplace have skyrocketed.

The Contributing Factors

Family Issues

If you or your colleague comes to work drunk or carries a drink with them, you should understand that the problem could have its roots in the family. If you come from a family where alcoholism is not an issue, chances are you will also adapt to that habit, including in your job.

Additionally, there has been a sudden upsurge in the number of family-related struggles, including divorce, deaths, and financial issues. In such a case, it is essential to consider researching what the individual might be going through back at home and develop an appropriate strategy to help them fight the problem.

The Culture at the Workplace

You and your fellow employees have a culture that you stick to while at work and outside. You have your way of creating connections and establishing relationships amongst yourselves. However, that can be the root cause of indulging in alcoholism as you undertake your duties at work. This is mainly seen in companies where most employees are males.

According to research, such employees share a drink to prove solidarity and show conformity, which is not the case in female-dominated jobs. Additionally, there are some industries where alcohol consumption is more prevalent than in others. Such sectors include hospitality and catering, maintenance and repair, manufacturing, construction, and healthcare.

Less Stringent Policies

You will find that in some companies and businesses, there are no policies laid out concerning alcohol consumption during working hours. Employees can consume liquor during breaks, at workstations, or even in the main office. As the world undergoes tremendous transformation, several employers have made it part of their businesses to make a bottle of wine available for their staff.

In such a case, the employees learn that there is nothing wrong with coming in with their own drinks or consuming one at the office anytime they feel like it. This is a different scenario than the one you will see in companies where drinking at work and general drinking is prohibited. The level of alcoholism in such cultures is significantly reduced, thanks to the stringent measures put in place by the management.

Inadequate Supervision

The current generation is motivated to handle different tasks only when someone is watching what they are doing. Unfortunately, there is a new trend of supervisors who sleep in their jobs and do not attend to their duties as required. In such a case, the employees under such a supervisor have the freedom to indulge in anything, including drug and substance abuse. Today, most businesses, companies, organizations, and businesses run for 24 hours, whereby employees report to work in shifts.

In most instances, daytime workers are under more strict supervision than their nighttime counterparts. This is why such inadequate supervision can be a significant contributing factor to alcoholism during working hours. Besides supervision, workers may feel the need to consume alcohol and drugs to keep themselves active during the night shift.

If you have employees working under or with you, it is essential to educate them on the importance of avoiding alcohol during working hours. Companies with strict guidelines on alcohol consumption do not experience its adverse effects, including reduced productivity, financial losses, and workplace fights.
