When you think of wine production in the United States most people think of Napa Valley in California. Before Napa there was Kansas, with a history of winemaking back to the mid 1800’s. By the 1870’s Kansas, along with its neighbor Missouri, was one of the biggest vineyard and wine-making operations in the US. Early German immigrants planted varietal grapes that thrived in the region’s fertile soil.

Unfortunately, Kansas was also ground zero for Carrie Nation and the early temperance movement, with Kansas being the first state to pass prohibition. The early vineyards were virtually destroyed however in 1920 when national prohibition passed. Liquor laws in Kansas crushed the industry until the Kansas Farm Winery Statute was passed in 1985. By 2005 there were 13 licensed farm wineries in Kansas. These wineries produced in excess of 50,000 gallons of wine.

What Is A Wine Tour?

Besides of course tasting wine, depending on the winery you may tour the vines themselves or find yourself in a tasting room. If the season is right, some winery tours let you pick a few grapes off of the vines. There are many different wineries tours that take advantage of these venues.

Crescent Moon Winery

Crescent Moon Winery makes a wine for all palates. From very dry to sweet wines they grow 11 types of grapes, both in white and red varieties. If you choose they will even invite you to join them in picking and crushing the grapes. They love showing the vineyards as well as the operations of the winery.

Jowler Creek

Jowler Creek, 30 minutes north of downtown Kansas City is touted as Missouri’s first green winery. Sample the wines in the tasting room, or in the wine garden next to their sustainable vineyard. These family-friendly winery tours welcome your children as long as they are supervised at all times. Even your dog is welcome here as long as they are leashed.

VanTill Family Farm Winery

From dry to dessert wines VanTill Family Farm Winery has a large selection of varietal wines. A wine garden that is open all year round is open air in the warmer months with glass doors, and outdoor heaters when the temperatures cool down. Book your private winery tours with accommodations for up to 50 people.

Rowe Ridge Vineyard & Winery

With a tasting room completed in 2012, Rowe Ridge Vineyard & Winery grows nine hybrid and native American grapes on five acres. Their first wine was produced in 2007 with currently ten wines available for sampling. You can view the vineyard from the tasting deck which is wheelchair accessible.

40 Plus Vineyards

There are 40-plus vineyards and tasting rooms in the Kansas City area, most with winery tours. Kansas City has a growing number of wineries using Kansas-grown grapes, with some winning national and international awards. No matter what your favorite varietal is, you are sure to find a wine to your liking in Kansas City with some of the best wine to be had. Book your trip to Kansas City for a winey tour soon.

It’s that time of the year: the holidays are around the corner. That means gifts galore and, of course, Christmas events in Kansas City. Holiday events are an excellent way to bring you closer to your family and have fun. Here is a list of some of the top Kansas City holiday events this year.

1. KC Winter Wonderland Event

KC Wine CO is a boutique winery in the Midwest known for palate-pleasing wines and ciders. Besides making excellent drinks, this winery also hosts a myriad of events all year round. Among them is the KC Winter Wonderland event, brought to you in conjunction with KC Pumpkin Patch. This holiday event allows you to walk around the farm, enjoying the incredible sights and sounds of the holidays this year. This event runs on select weekends during the holiday season, starting at 5:30 pm. While at it, you can take pictures with your family – and, of course, with Santa. There will also be festival foods and drinks. Grab your tickets today!

2. The Holiday Treasures Craft Festival

Do you have a soft spot for hand-crafted items? If you do, consider checking out the Holiday Treasures Craft festival this year, which has been going on every year for over two decades. You will get the chance to pick hand-crafted holiday gifts for your loved ones. This event will take place on October 22, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. What’s even better about this event is that admission is free and gives you a head start on holiday shopping. Some items you can buy include décor, food, clothing, and so much more. Wondering where? The event will be at the Shawnee Civic Center, 13817 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS.

3. The Elf in Concert Event

The Kansas City Symphony at Kauffman Center presents this event as a holiday classic. This event will run from December 21 through December 24, 2022. For the first three days, it will start at 7:00 pm, and on the last day, it will start as early as 11:00 a.m. The one thing you’ve got to appreciate about this event is its organization. You start enjoying it right from the entrance. For instance, you can enjoy parking for only $10 cash and valet services at $20 cash. The event also promises accessibility to audiences needing auditory, visual, or mobility assistance. It will happen at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts at 1601 Broadway Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108. You can get tickets for this event for between $45 and $105.

4. The Tricks and Treats Around the District

Are you excited about the holiday season? So are your kids and pets. The Tricks and Treats Around The District is the perfect event for you, the kiddos, and your furry friends. You can also tag your friends along. This event, happening across the Kansas City Power and Light District, will take place on October 29, 2022, from 12:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. You will get to walk around downtown and enjoy a wide range of treats from the participating venues. Worried about photo ops and cosplayers? Worry no more because Planet Comicon will be there for you.

5. Spook Fest at Science City

Get your costumes ready for the Science City Spookfest. This annual Halloween event will give you memories that will last forever. The event, which will take place on October 29, will be full of spooky science demos and activities, creepy critters, and much more. The schedule is packed with activities, including the bleeding handprints, spooky skies, and the great pumpkin race. The Science City Spookfest will take place at Union Station. Get your ticket for only $6 if you are a Union Station member or $8 for general admission.

6. Holiday Reflections

The Union Station might easily become your favorite spot this holiday season. First, it was the Spookfest, and now the Holiday Reflections event. The latter is brought to you by BOK Financial and will go down from November 21, 2022, to January 1, 2023. Even better, the activities will be happening each day of the week, starting from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m. We are talking about sky-reaching lights, decorated trees, floating mirrored ornaments, and so much more. Tickets will go for $7 on weekdays and $9 on weekends. However, if you are a Union Station member, you pay $7 any day of the week. Your ticket will give you access to the Model Train Gallery. You can also pay an extra $5 if you are a non-member to catch a ride thru Rudy’s Wonderland on the Mini Holiday Express Ride-On Train.

7. EBT Santa’s Countdown to Christmas

The EBT Santa’s Countdown to Christmas is one of Kansas City’s favorite parts of Christmas nostalgia. The EBT Laughing Santa has provided memories at the Crown Center for over four decades. The event takes place during Crown Center Shops’ holiday hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, it remains closed on Christmas, New Year’s, and Thanksgiving. And you don’t have to pay a penny to attend this holiday event.

Planning to Attend an Event?

There are so many events lined up for you this holiday season. Once you find one that you fancy, grab your tickets as soon as possible before they run out. It’s also essential to find out more details about the location, such as the parking details. Happy holidays!
