Fun Things to Do When Visiting San Diego

Are you thinking about taking a much-needed vacation? If so, you’re probably wondering about the destination.

We’re willing to bet you want to go someplace warm and sunny. A variety of fun and interesting things to see and do doesn’t hurt, either.

If that’s the case, then we suggest booking a trip to San Diego, California. Known as America’s Finest City, San Diego lives up to its reputation with a beautiful climate, incredible scenery, and no shortage of activities for visitors to experience.

Let’s take a closer look at six fun things you can do when visiting San Diego:

Beach day

There are 31 beautiful beaches located throughout the Greater San Diego Area. From Del Mar down to Imperial Beach, visitors are sure to find the perfect stretch of sunny sand to set up a cabana and watch the waves roll in for hours. Surfing, swimming, and sand castle building are just some of the fun activities you can do when spending a day at the beach. Just make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and remember to take safety rules seriously.

Zoo day

The San Diego Zoo is considered one of the best in the world. Home to thousands of exotic animals spread over 100 acres of land in Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo has enough exhibits and other attractions to keep you occupied all day. Barring a fear of heights, we recommend taking a ride on the Skyfari gondolas, which provide visitors with a true bird’s eye view of the various open-air exhibits. Fun fact: the first video uploaded to YouTube, appropriately titled Me at the zoo, was filmed in front of the African elephant enclosure.

Game day

The 2023 Major League Baseball season will be underway before long. In the meantime, the San Diego Padres are busy putting together a winning team, with several top talent acquisitions in recent years. Even if you’re not much of a baseball fan, Petco Park is a cauldron of fun and excitement on any given game day. With this in mind, we suggest catching a Padres game if they happen to be playing while you’re in town.

Food tours

San Diego is often cited as a foodie’s paradise. But the city is so big it can be difficult for first-time visitors to know where to go and make it to each top eatery in one trip. With this in mind, we recommend going on one or more food tours in San Diego during your visit. There are several curated experiences to choose from, including tours of the best bars and restaurants in Old Town, Little Italy, and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Whale watching

Many whale species can be spotted in the waters of San Diego Bay. The list includes blue whales, gray whales, and humpback whales. Numerous whale-watching voyages depart multiple docks and marinas every day, giving visitors plenty of chances to get relatively up close to these magnificent creatures. While there’s no guarantee you’ll see a whale breach the water in style, and the types of whales you’ll see will depend on the time of year you’re there, the tour guides are experts at knowing where to go to get the best chances at unforgettable observations.

USS Midway Museum

It’s difficult to appreciate the magnitude of the modern aircraft carrier unless you see one up close. Visiting San Diego gives you the perfect opportunity to do so, courtesy of the permanent docking of the USS Midway at the Navy pier. This massive warship served in the United States Navy for over 40 years and currently houses one of the largest military museums in the world. Visitors can explore multiple decks that contain antique aircraft, flight simulators, and other exhibits and attractions.

Are you overdue for a vacation? If so, consider putting San Diego on your shortlist of potential destinations. They don’t call it America’s Finest City for no reason! What’s more, there’s no shortage of fun and exciting things to see and do during your stay.
